EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION
Overview
The Experiential
Education requirement is designed to encourage students to gain educational
experience outside of the traditional classroom. The experience is also
designed to insure that the experience is linked to the academic component
of the program. For example, the Experiential Education requirement may
be satisfied by completing a coop work experience followed by an academic
course in which students and faculty reflect on the value of the experience.
Goals
Among the
goals of this requirement are:
- to examine
the value of a experience outside of the classroom;
- to examine
how learning in the classroom can be applied to activities outside the
classroom: and
- to explore
how the strategies of academic learning can be incorporated into endeavors
after college.
Requirements
To achieve
these goals, students must:
- obtain
relevant experience outside of the classroom (e.g., coop, research with
a faculty member, directed study), followed by a course that helps the
student make connections between this experience and academic learning;
- Participate
in a program in which experience outside of the classroom is inherently
linked to academic work, for example an honors project, study abroad,
or teacher certification.
