Overview

The courses required for the Behavioral Neuroscience major are divided into four categories: Foundation courses, Level 2 courses, Level 3 courses, and the Experiential Education requirement.

Foundation courses are introductory courses in psychology, biology, chemistry and mathematics, all of which are required and should be taken in the first year. In biology and math there are acceptable alternative sequences to those that are recommended (indented), and for some courses there are Honors alternatives that should be taken by students in the honors program.

Level 2 courses are courses in psychology, biology, and chemistry that have as prerequisites foundation courses. Level two courses are also all required.

Level 3 courses are courses in psychology and biology that are chosen by the student from the list of approved courses. With permission of your advisor, other psychology or biology courses not listed may count as a Level three course.

The Experiential Education requirement is designed to encourage students to gain educational experience outside of the traditional classroom. The experience should be linked to the academic components of the program. For example, the Experiential Education requirement may be satisfied by completing a coop work experience followed by an academic course in which students and faculty reflect on the value of the experience. For more information see the Experiential Education section of this site.
