Experential Research Opportunities for Behavioral Neuroscience Undergraduates

  • Position: Laboratory Research Assistant

    Location: Vision/Audition Laboratory, Dept. Psychology, 125NI, Northeastern University
    Necessary Skills: Spread-sheet skills; experience with statistical analysis helpful but not required; interest in learning about the effects of attention on human vision and/or audition.
    Compensation: volunteer, hourly (work-study) or COOP.
    Description: collect data on yourself and other subjects, using non-invasive computer-controlled equipment. Record, tabulate, and analyze data. Some library research.

  • Position: Laboratory Helper

    Location: Vision Laboratory, Dept. Psychology, Northeastern University
    Necessary Skills: Basic computer use skills, interest in learning about vision; MatLab programming skills a plus.
    Compensation: volunteer, hourly or COOP, depending on circumstances and commmittment
    Description: collect psychophysical data on yoursefl and other subjects, using state of the art psychophysical equipment and techniques.

  • Position: Hourly laboratory assistant

    Location: Richards Hall
    Necessary Skills: General lab skills and willingness to work with animals, or tissues from a animals
    Compensation: hourly or volunteer
    Description: Laboratory assistant. Duties vary, and could include: animal care, training animals on the treadmill, extracting muscles samples, dissection, assisting with surgery, analyzing data in Excel, and converting and analyzing video.
    Hours: flexible, availability on multiple days preferred.

  • Position: Directed study or honors projects

    Location: Richards Hall
    Necessary Skills: Skill level would vary with project. Individuals must be comfortable working with live animals.
    Compensation: Directed study or honors credit
    Description: The laboratory studies animal movement with emphasis on muscle function during locomotion. Because the overall research is integrative, opportunities are available for projects involving material properties, physiology, behavior, or biomechanics. Examples: Elastic properties of the tendons, gait choice during running, energy metabolism during running, limb kinematics during running
    Hours: Effort compatible with the number of hours of directed study credit

  • Position: Clinical Research Assistant (Psychiatry/Substance Abuse)

    Location: Alcohol & Drug Abuse Treatment Program, McLean Hospital (Belmont, MA).
    Necessary Skills: Ability or willingness to interact directly with acutely ill psychiatric patients.
    Compensation: Directed Study (graded).
    Description: This position involves patient interviewing, medical records review, data entry and verification, data analysis and occasionally poster and manuscript preparation.
    Hours: 2-8 hours/week occurring on Tuesdays and Thursdays between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Position: Electronic Neuron Programmer

    Location: MSC Nahant/Mobile Biomimetic Underwater Robot Program
    Necessary Skills: Ability or willingness to learn LabView™ G Programming Language
    Compensation: Volunteer
    Description: This position involves development of neuronal circuits based on discrete time Map-Based Neurons using the Labview Development Environment.
    Hours: Flexible

  • Position: Cocoa Programmer

    Location: MSC Nahant/Mobile Biomimetic Underwater Robot Program
    Necessary Skills: Ability or willingness to learn Cocoa: Objective C
    Compensation: Volunteer
    Description: This position involves participation in the upgrade of ColorImage to OS X. See: ColorImage. This program performs quantitative motion analysis of video data with correlated electrophysiology.
    Hours: Flexible
