Core Elements of a Resume

  1. Education. Use format on Sample Resume 1 and Sample Resume 2. Include Q.P.A. if over a 3.0. If you have attended two colleges, list Northeastern first. Include college honors and activities, if applicable, as a subsection of Education.
  2. Experience. Include paid and unpaid work; work-study jobs; volunteer work in which you played a leadership role. Include activities that are relevant to the organizations you are targeting or the skills you hope to use in your co-op position.
  3. Skills. Include computer skills, certifications, second languages.
  4. Interests. Be unique and specific (i.e. instead of "music" say "reggae".

Optional Elements of a Resume

  1. Research Experience. If you are applying for a research job, include any research experience to date. Specifically include: directed-study, work-study, volunteer, part-time and co-op positions. Place this section before "Experience" on your resume.
  2. Professional Affiliations. If you are a member of several professional organizations or societies, you may choose to include them in a separate section, usually towards the bottom of your resume.

Resume Tips

  1. Your resume is your sales brochure-make it print and spelling-error free.
  2. Build on your strengths and accomplishments.
  3. Avoid the tendency to undervalue your achievements.
  4. Be precise, logical, and truthful.
  5. Say what needs to be said, and no more!
  6. Use descriptive verbs and nouns to develop your job descriptions.
  7. Avoid vague words (i.e. assisted, helped, responsible for).
  8. Place positions in reverse chronological order.
