PROFESSIONAL
BEHAVIOR GUIDE
During your
period of co-op employment, you will be expected to learn and implement
a set of professional behaviors that will help you succeed in the workplace
and in other life endeavors.
These behaviors
include, but are not limited to the following:
- Complete
mindful, thoughtful, quality work.
- Promptness
-- be on time at work, meet deadlines, and follow-through.
- Don't
be afraid to ask for help or consultation. Problems do come up! Attempt
to talk to your supervisor and/or Michelle Israel. Do not come back
to campus after your co-op job and tell us for the first time that you
had "a boring six months" or "had many problems with
a supervisor". Problems not addressed are problems not solved.
- Set your
own expectations for your work. Go above and beyond what is expected
of you (i.e. written in a job description).
- Communicate
regularly with your supervisors.
- Be
clear about expectations and intentions. Check in with your supervisor
with any questions about what is expected of you.
- Seek
feedback on your work.
- Keep
people up-to-date on your progress.
- Write
thank-you notes (after you leave).
- Seek
out and develop mentoring relationships.
- Test
assumptions you make about others.
- Communicate
effectively with your supervisors and colleagues.
- Ask
for what you want or need. You may not always get it, but you won't
get the support you need if you don't ask (in a courteous manner!).
- Be
honest and direct.
- Don't
lay blame or make excuses. Take responsibility. Make "I"
statements.
- Don't
be defensive. Put yourself in another person's shoes.
- Be
open-minded and flexible. LISTEN well.
